Now known as Lot Fourteen, the site is being transformed into Australia’s first creation and innovation neighbourhood.
Citing South Australia’s reputation as a key hub for innovation and the technology industry, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that Australia’s Space Agency will be located in Adelaide.
The Agency will be located at Lot Fourteen at the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site.
The move is part of the new Adelaide City Deal, with a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and South Australian Premier Steven Marshall, aimed at turbo-charging Adelaide’s economy and driving long term investment in the city.
It is hoped the Government’s investment of $41 million will triple Australia’s space economy to $12 billion and create up to 20,000 jobs by 2030.
Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the redevelopment of the old Royal Adelaide Hospital will harness Adelaide’s greatest strengths – its cultural depth, research excellence and commercial potential.
“The Agency location and the Adelaide City Deal will align to allow better management of population growth and city planning,” Minister Tudge said.
“This will ensure jobs, infrastructure, services and public spaces are in place to create a faster-growing, productive and liveable Adelaide.”
“City Deals are about all three levels of government working together to drive the local economy and we are already see many cities benefitting from these deals including Darwin, Townsville, Launceston and Western Sydney.”
Lot Fourteen is targeting tenants involved in high growth, deep technology sectors, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, defence and space, cyber security and blockchain technology, and immersive media and creative industries.
The precinct includes six heritage listed buildings on North Terrace and Frome Road that are being retained and refurbished. The remaining obsolete buildings are being demolished, making way for new buildings to suit enterprises of the future, plus a major cultural facility fronting North Terrace, an international culinary school, and a comprehensive public realm design that will open the site up to the community.
Contractor McMahon Services was engaged to undertake Stage One demolition at Lot Fourteen, beginning in December 2017. The Australian Space Agency will be located in Adelaide by mid-2019.
