A former World War II airport at the Macarther town of The Oaks is up for sale, for the first time in 44 years.
The opportunity to take ownership of an airport in south-west Sydney is available through Savills Australia.
Now a privately owned aerodrome, the 40.62-hectare* Oaks Airport is located at 995 Burragorang Road, The Oaks, about 80 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD.
Savills Australia NSW Director of Metropolitan and Regional Sales, Tom Tuxworth, said the site was one of only four commercially licensed airports in the Sydney Basin, providing strong potential for capital growth.
"One hundred acres of prime land in this location should be well suited to many astute buyers, including Australia's leading institutions," he said.
At a glance:
“With alternate investments being looked at closely by many buyer groups on the back of a softening bond market and volatile stock exchange, we are excited to see the types of buyers investigate this opportunity further."
The Oaks airport was constructed in 1942 as a satellite field of Camden Airport- at the time a major operational base and RAAF station.
It was built with a sealed 1,500-metre runway and could function as a dispersal base to hide aircraft should the major base in Sydney come under attack.
Today, the airport caters mostly to recreational aircraft and fight training, while also being home to the Sydney Recreational Flying Club.
It is the only satellite airport constructed during the war in greater Sydney to still be used for aviation activities.
Savills Australia Metropolitan and Regional Sales Director, Nick Lower, land values across Western Sydney were continuing to accelerate, driven largely by significant levels of demand, a shortage of available serviced land, and a lack of investment stock being brought to market.
“While a sale ‘as is’ was possible, there was also significant upside for an industrial or residential development, particularly given its proximity to the new Badgery’s Creek Airport," he said.
