What inspired you to pursue a career in the property industry and how did your journey start?
My journey into the property industry was somewhat unexpected. After high school, I initially pursued a course in Fashion, but it quickly became apparent that it wasn't the right fit for me. I then began applying for various jobs and eventually landed a position as a receptionist at a residential suburban agency.
From there, I progressed into property management, where I gained valuable experience and knowledge about the industry. My career then took me into the realm of commercial and industrial assets before I joined Colliers to work on a Government portfolio. Most recently, I transitioned to the Colliers Tenant Advisory team. Each step of my journey has been a learning experience, and I am grateful for the opportunities that have led me to where I am today.
Can you share a significant challenge you faced in your career and how you overcame it?
One of the most significant challenges I faced in my career was transitioning to the Tenant Advisory team. This move required me to learn an entirely new market and adapt to a commission-based structure, which was a substantial change after nearly a decade in property management. Overcoming this challenge was not easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. The key to my success was dedicating time to immerse myself in the new market, committing to continuous learning, and seeking guidance from experienced colleagues. By collaborating with different operators, expanding my network, and actively participating in various projects, I have built the knowledge and confidence to get me where I am today.
What is the best advice you have ever received, and how has it impacted your career?
The best advice I have ever received is to "get comfortable with being uncomfortable." Embracing discomfort has been a game-changer for my professional development. It has pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, take on new challenges, and seize opportunities I might have overlooked. This mindset has accelerated my growth and opened doors to exciting possibilities and experiences. By leaning into discomfort, I have achieved things I never thought possible and continuously evolved in my career.
What achievements are you most proud of in your career so far?
One of the main highlights was coming third in the APAC Rising Star category within Colliers. Something I never thought would be achievable, so to be recognised in this category is quite an achievement. Another significant milestone was my recent promotion to Associate Director.
What advice would you give young women and men considering a career in property?
My advice to young women and men considering a career in property is to go for it with enthusiasm and determination. The property industry is incredibly diverse and constantly evolving, offering many opportunities for those willing to embrace them. Regardless of what you think you may be interested in, always say yes to opportunities and you never know where it may lead. If you have the right attitude you can go very far in this industry.
