In celebration of International Women's Day, We interview women from diverse backgrounds and roles within the property industry, including Milly Stockdale –Colliers Director | Office Leasing, as they share insights into their careers in real estate.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the property industry and how did your journey start?
I really didn't have a choice - real estate was in my blood, as I was the fourth generation of real estate agents. I have always loved residential real estate, and I dreamed of being a realtor in Colorado during the summer and a ski instructor in the winter, which is my other passion.
After realising that wasn't going to work due to visa reasons, my dad encouraged me to go down the path of commercial real estate, which he specialised in at the time. I started off with my Agents Representative Licence and was fortunate to get a junior property manager role in a boutique commercial agency in the city. That is where I gained exposure to the office, industrial and retail sectors. From that experience, I particularly enjoyed the office sector, which led me to chase a role in office leasing. It took nearly two years to make the transition and get an opportunity, and I haven't looked back.
Can you share a significant challenge you faced in your career and how you overcame it?
It sounds cliche, but the constant challenge I face at the moment is finding the balance between work and being a mother of three young kids. Juggling both responsibilities often feels like a never-ending task, and there are days when it is overwhelming trying to give my best in both areas.
Mistakes happen, and things sometimes don't go as planned, and that's been a crucial lesson for me. I'm learning to be more organised, delegate and say 'no'.
What is the best advice you have ever received, and how has it impacted your career?
The first piece of advice I received on my first day was that the property industry is very small. If you look after people, they'll look after you. It resonated with me and has shaped how I conduct my work daily. I always strive to provide exceptional customer service, whether it's to clients, colleagues, or contractors.
What achievements are you most proud of in your career so far?
One of the things I am most proud of in my career is approaching my 10th anniversary at Colliers. Having a great team around me has contributed significantly to my individual achievements, and I am very fortunate to work with such a supportive and caring team that continues to challenge each other every day.
What advice would you give young women and men considering a career in property?
Just have a go and back yourself. The property industry is an extremely rewarding and enjoyable industry to be a part of.
