In celebration of International Women's Day, Colliers' interview women from diverse backgrounds and roles within the property industry, including Catherine Scott – Collier Associate Director | Office Capital Markets & Investment Services, as they share insights into their careers.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the property industry and how did your journey start?
I’ve always had a passion for property, particularly architecture and design. This passion led me to my first property role in the residential sector. I started out as a receptionist and gradually progressed to an assistant role. From there, I became a sales associate and eventually a team manager, working closely with two high-performing agents. However, I wasn’t quite ready to become a solo sales agent at that time. An opportunity arose to transition into the commercial sector, which I decided to pursue. My commercial career began within a capital markets office team, providing me with a fantastic pathway for growth. Over the past nine years, I’ve worked across multiple roles and am now a sales agent specialising in office assets.
Can you share a significant challenge you faced in your career and how you overcame it?
It wasn’t so much a challenge as it was more overcoming a fear. Pitching and presenting are significant aspects of our work, and the first time I had to sit in a boardroom in front of institutional clients, it was quite daunting. I was incredibly fortunate to have a fantastic team that provided excellent training and made sure we rehearsed extensively. Practice truly makes perfect! After learning some tips and tricks to frame my pitch, I now love pitching and presenting. And if I do say so myself, I think I’m a pretty decent presenter! Haha.
What is the best advice you have ever received, and how has it impacted your career?
The one percenters really matter and set you apart from the competition. I always strive to go above and beyond, which has become a key part of my personal brand. These small, extra efforts have significantly pushed my career forward, leading to promotions and building trust with clients.
What achievements are you most proud of in your career so far?
A few highlights come to mind. I was awarded a trip to Uluru for excellence in capital markets, along with other peers. I’ve worked on some very high-profile office sales campaigns, including the 50% landmark transaction of Darling Quarter in Sydney and the sale of 1 Woolworths Way in Bella Vista, which is the largest suburban single office asset to ever trade! Last year, I had the honour of being a keynote speaker and host for Colliers and Macquarie Bank’s Q3 commercial property update, which brought together over 120 clients.
What advice would you give young women and men considering a career in property?
The property sector isn’t just about sales and leasing. There are so many services and roles that play an integral part in the industry. I encourage young men and particularly women to explore what’s out there and ask more questions about their skills and interests, and how those could translate into a career in property. Too often, I’ve had conversations with young women who thought property roles were just for men. Let me tell you, there are many inspiring women in property, both established and emerging. The industry is actively striving to attract more women, and I am big advocate for accelerating progress for women in property.
